“I pay them more than most would and I have a bonus program,” Parker says. “We have longevity in our staff because of it. I haven’t had a lot of turnover because I treat them right. I spend one-on-one time with each of them. Everybody learns by watching me. It’s the best training in the world.”
One of the ways Pick Ups Plus sets itself apart from the competition is through its dedication to staying on top of new products and technology. Parker trains his staff on the latest products when he sees consumer interest increase.
“Most of my competitors won’t offer products beyond their scope because they aren’t trained well enough,” he says. “If I have people requesting something new, I will start offering it and training my guys on that specific technology. That’s how I grown this business.”
Lately, performance products like nerf bars, shocks and lug shields have been major sellers. “With the fuel crunch right now, we’re selling lots of diesel tuners and fuel enhancers,” Parker says.
The Big Pay-off
Given that the medical company that Parker walked out of folded within one year of his departure, it appears he made a smart choice in leaving. How he deals with customers, manufacturers and staff at Pick Ups Plus reflects his continued efforts to make smart business choices, and keeps Pick Ups Plus at the forefront of the Houston automotive aftermarket business.
“The competition is not truly competition to me,” Parker says. “I have fair pricing, good customer service and quality installs. That’s what keeps customers coming back.”
