EL CENTRO, Calif. – The Black Cat trail on the northern side of Superstition Mountain near San Diego, Calif., was honored today by BFGoodrich Tires as one of the 2008 Outstanding Trails. More than 150 off-road enthusiasts, members of El Centro Chamber of Commerce and the San Diego 4-Wheelers off-road club were in attendance as BFGoodrich Tires presented a grant to the club’s president. The grant will be used to preserve the scenic trails and continue conservation efforts for one of America’s picture-perfect areas for off-roading.

BFGoodrich Tires, working in conjunction with Tread Lightly! and United Four Wheel Drive Associations (UFWDA), chose the Black Cat as one of the 2008 Outstanding Trails because of its challenging rock climbs, sandy hills and wild drop-offs. Though it may be quite challenging to the novice off-roader, its steep, rocky hill climb overlooking the Sand Dam does not disappoint and provides a challenge for all who choose to take it on.

“With its rocky obstacles and scenic sandy hills, the Black Cat trail at Superstition Mountain has the perfect combination of leveled obstacles for the skilled off-roader, making it a special choice for the 2008 Outstanding Trails program,” says Gary Enterline, light truck product manager for BFGoodrich Tires.

The San Diego 4-Wheelers is a non-profit, family-oriented organization and support Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) recreation within the spirit of Tread Lightly. The club helps in the maintenance and preservation of existing 4WD OHV opportunities and the creation of new opportunities where possible. The principal function of the club is to promote and participate in safe and responsible off-highway four wheel drive activities and to educate the public on how to properly use and conserve the land.

Launched in 2006, the BFGoodrich Tires Outstanding Trails program is dedicated to the responsible use, and preservation of, off-road trails while providing aid in the trails’ conservation efforts. Over the past two years, the Outstanding Trails program has recognized 11 off-road trails in nine states and one in Canada. The program has also given $42,000 in grants to clubs and seen more than 1,700 participants in trail events.

The following additional five trails have also been selected as part of the 2008 BFGoodrich Tires Outstanding Trails program:

  • Blacktail/Wild Bill OHV Trail located in the Flathead National Forest of Montana
  • Iron Range OHV Recreational Area in Gilbert, Minn.
  • Quinn Trail that leads to Quinn Lake in Ottawa, Canada
  • Pritchett Canyon, one of the toughest trails in Moab, Utah
  • Beasley Knob OHV trail located near Blairsville, Ga.
